Exhibition at Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick, Maine, 2 March 2023 - 7 January 2024
The American collector J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) acquired in only twenty-three years a collection of 20,000 works of art - sculptures, rare manuscripts and books, engravings and drawings, paintings, decorative arts... - that testify to his discerning eye and refined taste. His collection of Greek and Roman bronzes, donated in 1917 by Morgan's son to the Wadsworth Athenuem, includes pieces representing men and women, gods and mortals, humans and animals, and even furniture embellishments.
This richly illustrated exhibition catalogue presents highlights from the Wadsworth Atheneum's Morgan Bronze Collection, considering these works as a group for the first time. The book also discusses the research into these exceptional objects, their production process and their representation in an ancient context.
