Exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, 7 September 2022 - 2 January 2023
Gérard Garouste (1946-) is one of the most important contemporary French painters, a follower of uncompromising figuration. Inscribed in turn in mythology, literature, the biblical narrative and Talmudic studies, his painting does not seek to seduce but questions relentlessly, shaking up certainties.
Published on the occasion of the major retrospective devoted to Gérard Garouste, this catalogue presents 120 major paintings, often in very large format, as well as installations, sculptures and graphic works. It allows us to grasp the full richness of the artist's career, whose life and enigmatic work feed off each other in a striking dialogue.
