Exhibition at the Musée Condé, Château de Chantilly, 3 June - 1 October 2023
Unclassifiable and visionary in many ways, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) revealed a fascinating originality and quest for perfection behind his apparent classicism.
With the advent of the July Monarchy (1830-1848), Ingres found strong support in the Orléans family, with whom he forged close ties, enabling him to produce some of his greatest masterpieces.
This exhibition catalogue looks at how Ingres became the artist of princes. Drawn from national and international collections, the paintings and drawings commissioned or collected by the Princes of Orléans are brought together here, alongside their studies and variants. They allow us to appreciate the perfectionist and methodical work of one of France's greatest painters.
