French painter Jacques Germain (1915-2001) studied with Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant at the Académie Moderne. The only French artist to attend the Bauhaus, Germain studied with Kandinsky and Josef Albers and continued his training in Frankfurt with Willi Baumeister.

Back in France after seven years of captivity in Germany, he took part in the post-war adventure of abstraction. Supported by the Pierre gallery, he took part in the "White and Black" exhibition organised by Georges Mathieu in 1948. His non-figurative work attempts to convey movement, the cycle of life and the elements, and light, through matter alone.

This first monograph devoted to Jacques Germain retraces his career and his demanding work, conceived in solitude and in close proximity to poets and writers, including Blaise Cendrars, Antonin Artaud and Jean Grenier.
