Exhibition at the Neue Galerie, New York, 15 February - 6 May 2024
During the last twenty years of his career, Gustav Klimt devoted considerable energy to painting landscapes during his summer holidays. Some of these are now among his most sought-after paintings.
This richly illustrated exhibition catalogue situates Klimt's landscapes alongside fin-de-siècle fashion, photography and the decorative arts of the Wiener Werkstätte. The paintings are analysed in the context of his overall oeuvre and trace the development of his style. The book also looks at Klimt's relationship with his muse, the fashion designer Emilie Flöge, his deep involvement with the Viennese avant-garde and the specific techniques he employed to create hypnotic, harmonious works.
