A source of fascination for more than a century and a half, the samurai has become part of our imagination. His figure, his history and above all his myth have contributed to making this character one of the historical emblems of Japan.

In the 17th century, after a long succession of incessant wars, the Edo period (1603-1868) began, an era of peace and prosperity during which the warrior lord retained an important place in Japanese society. This new intellectual elite embodied the values - loyalty, honour, courage, righteousness - codified at that time in the "way of the warrior" (bushido), and portrayed in the multiple expressions of Japanese art.

The remarkable works reproduced in this book, kept at the Musée Guimet, invite us to discover the richness of the representation of the samurai up to the contemporary period.
