The result of fifteen years of research, this book explains how the world of ceramics and the world of art came together in the Île-de-France region over the course of a century rich in technical innovations, economic transformations and new artistic influences.
It begins by examining the issue from the point of view of studio ceramists, illustrated by the examples of Ernest Chaplet, Adrien Dalpayrat, Émile Decoeur, Guidette Carbonell and others. It then goes on to show how ceramics factories created pieces with an artistic purpose alongside their everyday production, using examples from factories in Montereau, Choisy-le-Roi, L'Isle-Adam and Ivry-sur-Seine. Through a study of their means of production, marketing, exhibition and reception, as well as an examination of the ways in which ceramists were trained and the collaborations they established between themselves, this book examines the degree of artification they achieved. A directory of ceramists, classified by city, completes this volume.
