RARE BOOK

Flemish tapestry is unanimously recognised as a summit of universal art and its finest productions were disseminated throughout the world. From the 15th century to the end of the 18th century, there were countless series of tapestries with historical, biblical or mythological subjects from the Brussels workshops. From 1554 onwards, they were exported from the port of Antwerp and adorned the walls of princely palaces in Vienna, Madrid and the Louvre.

The allegorical themes of the four continents and the four seasons, mythological or from ancient history, had a strong influence on the iconology of their time, as did the representations of hunting scenes or rural life. Almost all of the great factories in Europe - most notably the Real Fabrica in Madrid and the Gobelins - were established with the help of master weavers from Brussels, Enghien or Bruges.

This reference book offers a synthesis of more than three centuries of the art of tapestry in the Southern Netherlands, as well as a rich iconography of tapestry ensembles or details.
