Institution closely linked to the monarchy, reflection of its splendour and ambitions, the Garde-meuble de la Couronne saw its prestigious existence called into question at the French Revolution. Although its attributions were reduced, it temporarily resisted to republican austerity before disappearing in May 1798, because of a lack of support to its political action.
This book studies the hectic fate of this administration, from its dispossession to its rebirth with the French Empire under the name of Mobilier imperial. It traces its concrete operation and the evolution of its various missions.
