Exhibition at the Musée du Louvre, Paris, 19 October 2023 - 29 January 2024
In the aftermath of the fire that struck Notre-Dame de Paris on 15 April 2019, the Musée du Louvre has opened its doors to the cathedral's masterpieces for safekeeping. The chalices, ciboria, stoles, ancient books and precious relics that survived the fire are now exceptionally reunited, before returning to their restored setting, the sacristy built in the mid-19th century at the foot of the cathedral by Jean-Baptiste Lassus and Viollet-le-Duc.
For the first time, this exhibition catalogue retraces the history of the treasure before the French Revolution through inventories, historical accounts, paintings, illuminated manuscripts, engravings and other figurative documents, as well as a number of works that have come down to us. The book includes 120 works, from its origins in the Middle Ages to its resurrection in the 19th century and its flowering under Viollet-le-Duc in the Second Empire.
