In the ceramics world of the 1950s, the work of Mado Jolain (1921- 2019) is striking for its modernity and the formal games she played with it. Very early on, the ceramist showed a preference for simple, architectural volumes, worked in such a way as to allow the subtle articulation of light and shade to flourish.
Primavera called on his talent, which was soon relayed by Parisian galleries and decorators such as Samardiras and Merceron. In 1955, he was exhibited at the prestigious La Demeure gallery, which was helping to revive contemporary tapestry. He was more interested in the development of the construction of the object than in the decoration, which tended towards abstraction. At the end of the 1950s, Mado Jolain settled with her family on the banks of the Marne, in Champigny, and began a new creative phase that enriched the plant world. The forms became purer and stronger.
This exhibition catalogue gives an insight into the work of Mado Jolain, whose free spirit and love of rigour played a key role in the revival of ceramics in the 1950s and 1960s.
