Exhibition at Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, 23 October 2022 - 26 February 2023
The ingenious colour patterns of Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979), a pioneer of modernism, blurred the boundaries between the visual and applied arts. The artist developed her pictorial experiments in fashion, fabric patterns, interior decoration, book and object art, fusing geometric abstraction with the sculptural qualities of pure colour.
Drawing on previously unpublished sources and including works from 1910 to the 1970s, this exhibition catalogue explores the richness of Sonia Delaunay's applied art oeuvre and shows how the artist redefined the relationship between art and industry in the process of designing a modern, visionary life.
Special attention is paid to the collection of the Museum Krefeld, which forms the basis of this publication: the works were originally part of a collection acquired directly from Sonia Delaunay in the 1940s by the textile entrepreneur Robert Perrier, who was active in Paris and Lyon; some of the important works from the Perrier family archive are presented in public for the first time on the occasion of the exhibition.
