Romanian-born Martha Bibescu (1886-1973) was one of the most important and representative figures in the world of the Belle Époque. Connected to the most important political and intellectual figures of the time, from the kings of Romania to King Alfonso XIII of Spain, from Charles de Gaulle to Winston Churchill and Marcel Proust, she intertwined her life with that of the sculptor and architect Domenico Rupolo (1861-1945), who was responsible for the radical modernisation of the Bibescu Palace in Mogoșoaia : a veritable court in which Martha was able to weave dense political and diplomatic intrigues for decades in interiors decorated and furnished by Mariano Fortuny.

To crown the deep association that bound him to Martha Bibescu, in 1933 Rupolo executed her marble portrait, a remarkable and unexpected addition to the portrait of one of the most popular women of the 20th century, and presented for the first time in this volume.

This book reconstructs not only the multiple identities of the princess of a thousand lives, between culture and politics, but also the activities of Rupolo, a multifaceted and eccentric figure, a partly forgotten protagonist of Italian artistic events in the first half of the twentieth century.
