Exhibition at Centre Pompidou, Paris, 6 April - 1st August 2016

German artist Paul Klee (1879-1940) created a corpus of almost 10 000 works. Throughout his career, Klee has devoted himself to assert his total independence regarding towards the Modernists of his time, never hesitating to talk ironically about their principles. For Klee's first great retrospective in France since 1969, the Centre Pompidou decided therefore decided to explore his work from the angle of romantic irony.


This catalogue highlights the 250 exhibited works. From Cubism to Constructivism and Primitivism, each period is studied through his greatest masterworks (paintings, lithographs, prints, drawings and puppets). The book, to which Paul Klee's main specialists have contributed, also clarifies Klee's relationships with his peers and with the contemporary movements of his time. The various chapters comprise chronology, essay, thematic focus and notes. The book is completed by an anthology of interviews
