This book starts out of the librairie Lardanchet by a discussion between the painter Pierre Peyrolle, who just bought a copy of Cabinets de Curiosités by Patrick Mauriès, and the author, Pierre Rival.
A mysterious castle, a mysterious art collector, a mysterious decorator, and maybe the most beautiful "cabinet de curiosités" constituted for a long time. The writer Pierre Rival was associated to this adventure and made of it this very illustrated book haunted by the ghost of the 17th-century polygraph and polyglot Jesuit Athanasius Kircher, who inspired this amazing journey in the baroque universe. He recounts the trip to the Chamarande castle, before describing the rooms one by one.
