Exhibition at the Fondation Gianadda, Martigny, 12 July - 19 November 2024
At the crossroads of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Renoir and Cézanne carved two furrows in pictorial modernity: the first by blazing the trail of Impressionism, where line gave way to brushstroke, colour and light; the second by paving a new path for rhythmic and synthetic lines. Although distinct, their paths never ceased to converge, through friendship and mutual admiration, and through a commonality of subjects and questions, from still life to landscapes, and from portraiture to the nude.
The two painters also shared collectors and dealers who established them on the art market: Victor Chocquet, Ambroise Vollard, Albert Barnes and Paul Guillaume and his wife.
This exhibition catalogue brings together 60 masterpieces by the two artists, who compare, confront and then emancipate each other. The work illustrates the impact of Renoir and Cézanne on the new generation of modern painters.
