Exhibition at the Deutsches Ledermuseum, Offenbach am Main, 12 November 2022 - 30 July 2023
Whether as a token of love, an accessory for a duel, or a badge of royalty, the glove is a highly symbolic accessory with a long tradition and is firmly anchored in the etiquette of the court and, later, the bourgeoisie.
This exhibition catalogue traces the cultural history of the glove. Inuit mittens, boxing gloves, disposable rubber or latex gloves, pontifical gloves and models by renowned designers such as Marc Jacobs and Dries Van Noten show the diversity of this fashion item, which is currently enjoying a renaissance.
The different stages in the evolution of the glove are traced and placed in their historical context. Student work from the unique accessories design course at the Hochschule Pforzheim, Germany, concludes the publication. These creations show a wide range of design possibilities: from delicate structures made of tulle or lace to fingerless gloves decorated with (dried) flowers and a 3D printed glove.
